Maths in Y1

2017-2018

Term 5

We have had lots of fun during term 5. We explored the stories Jack and the Beanstalk and The Little Red Hen. There was some beautiful writing produced and some lovely art. Well done children.

We also had a super day at Court Farm. We watched farmer Ed milk the cow and learnt about how milk is used. We explored all of the farm animals and learnt lots about growing.

Term 4

During term 4 the children had lots of fun learning about space.

We explored the story of Beegu after her space ship landed in the playground. The children's writing skills developed through the exploration of this lovely story.

We also learnt about the planets as well as continuing our materials topic and using our own ideas to make a rocket.

We had lots of fun when Mrs Bush came to work with us and showed us how to make a homemade lava lamp and enjoyed science activities within our house groups.

All in all a very busy term. See below for photos of our fun learning.

TERM 3

Term 3 began with 'Little Red Riding Hood'. We had lots of fun exploring the story across all of our subjects. We learnt a new song, we investigated maps and we got creative with our art and DT.

We have been busy learning and writing the story and worked really hard. Take a look in the classroom to see the lovely things we have done.

TERM 5 and 6  PLANTS

During terms 5 and 6 we will be exploring a wide variety of plants. We have already investigated what different parts of a flower are called.

We have done some gardening and planted some vegetables and flowers with help from Mrs Welch.

We have investigated how plants grow and what they need in order to grow.

We have learnt all about Jack and the beanstalk and explored the book in detail through drama, writing and story maps.

The Children had a wonderful day at Leigh Woods. We played interactive games and learnt about different types of tress and there uses as well as facts about woodland animals. We also made a paper flower pot and planted some flower seeds.

TERM 4 SPACE

What a wonderful time we are having exploring space. We started by exploring the planets and trying to remember their names. We have been using the story 'Whatever Next' where little bear goes to the moon in his cardboard rocket. The children have produced some beautiful writing about a visit to the moon as well as some lovely rhyming poems.

Space week was lots of fun, Jo Richardson our space ambassador talked to us about how craters are made and then we investigated and measured craters using sand and marbles.

The children are really enjoying learning about space including researching on the ipads, looking in books and making their own rockets using a variety of construction toys and modelling.

Term 3

The children have had lots of fun exploring their favourite books this term. They have written about the characters in their book and completed a book review about their book. As well as individual books we have explored 'Going on a bear hunt' as a class and I have to say we have some very good actors in class 1.

We have been looking at maps as part of our Geography and explored Africa. We had a visitor into school who has visited and helped in Kenya and she told us all about how people live in Kenya and showed us lots of wonderful photos and artefacts.

We have learnt lots in maths as well such as adding and subtracting, time and how to measure and compare things that are long and short.

Across the school we are beginning to introduce some class sharing and we are delighted that Year 4 have been visiting our class every Tuesday afternoon and sharing stories with us. They even showed us their electricity posters and explained how to stay safe near electricity.

Please see below for some lovely photos of us being busy learners.

Term 2

Well what a busy term we have had. The children have been busy investigating materials that float, making their own 3D house, learning lots of new sounds, visiting St Martin's Church and taking part in a wonderful nativity. Have a look at the pictures to see them in action.

Then if that wasn't enough we won the attendance trophy in week 6 and enjoyed a wonderful day out seeing the animals and joining in a nativity in a barn with a real donkey at Noah's Ark zoo farm.

Term 1

This term our topic is houses and homes. We have been learning about what different types of houses are called. We have been building houses out of straws and bricks like the three little pigs.

Investigating materials to build a house.

Our local area.

The children really enjoyed their local walk around St Georges. There was lots to see such as the different types of houses we have been learning about and the local park. On our travels we also saw a frog, a feather, some autumn leaves and a cottage. The children had a lovely time and have learnt lots about different houses that we live in.

Have a look below to see what the class of 2015-2016 did last year. They had lots of fun learning many new things.

Leigh Woods

The children had a fantastic day at Leigh woods. We learnt about the animals that live in the woodland and how the trees provide shelter, water, air and food for them. We played interactive games that helped us learn the names of different trees and what the tree could be used for. We also made our own pot and planted flowers that will now go into our gardening area at school.

Green Fingers Term 5

The children have really enjoyed learning about 'Jack and the beanstalk'. We have used the story in many ways, from designing our own character, writing our own version of the story and learning about planting and growing (although we didn't have any magic beans).

The children have been working really hard in all subject areas and are particularly enjoying their creative art work and gardening. We have planted herbs, broad beans and sunflower seeds so far and in term 6 we will investigate growing and planting even further.

Terms 3 and 4 have been very busy. The children have been busy sharing their favourite story book with each other as well as learning about authors and the characters in the stories. The children even drew pictures of their favourite character using the ipads.

In the life bus

In the life bus the children met Harold the giraffe. Harold helped the children learn all about keeping healthy, they learnt about our bodies organs as well as the five things we need to stay oxygen, exercise and sleep.healthy: food, water.

Friendship

During term 3 we spent time thinking about how to be a good friend. In our RE we have been discussing whether it was always easy for Jesus to show friendship. The children really enjoyed learning stories about Jesus showing friendship and we even made our very own class 'web of friendship' sharing ideas about how we can show friendship to others.

In term 2 the children explored how best to make a house as well as discovered the beautiful art of stained glass windows. We visited St Martins Church and the children really enjoyed exploring the lovely building as well as asking questions and finding out all about what goes on at St Martins Church. We learnt that they have a choir, the vicar uses the pulpit to stand on when he speaks so that everyone can see him, they hold weddings and that babies are baptised using the font.

The children had lots of fun With Mary Evans. She shared her recipe for a story stew and talked to the children about the key ingredients to create a story. The children explored lots of different characters and talked about using their imagination.

In class the children thought of their own character and had a go at writing their own story. The pictures show them hard at work.
