We are mathematicians
We are mathematicians. We are curious about the world around us and understand the importance of mathematics in contributing to our global community.
St Georges uses the elements of fluency, reasoning and problem solving to equip learners with a broad range of mathematical skills, providing a basis for their next steps into secondary school and the wider world.
Fluency: St Georges’ curriculum is founded in providing a solid foundation for our mathematicians to explore the subject further. We understand that this foundation comes from confidence in using number, and that this confidence comes from practise. We ensure that pupils can perform arithmetic operations, understand mathematical symbols, and recall key facts. Regular fluency practise supports our mathematicians to develop both their speed and calculation strategies.
Reasoning: We aim to develop students’ ability to think critically – a key skill within mathematics and beyond. We promote discussion and support pupils’ ability to find patterns and links between concepts. We encourage our mathematicians to explain their thought processes and justify their solutions using mathematical reasoning.
Problem solving: We understand that perseverance and resilience are not just key in maths, and understand our problem-solving skills can be applied to different contexts. We give our mathematicians opportunities and challenges that require creativity and application of principles they have learnt. Students will learn to approach problems systematically, break them down, and explore multiple strategies for solutions.
‘Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education, therefore, provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
We are currently reviewing and updating the calculation policy at St Georges Church School.

What the pupils say about maths at St Georges:
What we enjoy about being mathematician:
I can work things out in my head or in my book.
I can see when I’ve found the answer.
I learn skills to help me at home and outside of school.
Sometimes we get to work out problems with a group.
How can maths support us with friends and relationships?
my friends and I like to talk about our maths problems and find Solutions together.
I can always ask people to help me when I’m not sure.
I can work out how many people need to be on each team to make it fair.
How does learning maths help us with our feelings and emotions?
I like that there’s resources to help me when I’m stuck.
We are challenged and have to be resilient to find the answer.
If I don’t know things, I can find the answer.
What ELLI characters have you been as a mathematician?
Busy Bee- we work in pairs, in groups and on our own.
Resilient Tortoise – sometimes we have to try different methods to find the answer.
Changing Chameleon- if you get it wrong, you can go back over it and find the correct answer.
